==== The Genealogists Saved the Day, but read this anyway ! ======= Please help with this even if you aren't a genealogist! Urgent - Your help is needed. It has just come to our attention that the Oklahoma Legislature is quickly passing a measure that would allow destruction of the records transferred to the County Clerks when the old County Superintendent's office was abolished. These records include the school census records that were taken each year in our early history and are filled with important genealogical information! These records have been used by many who were born before birth certificates to establish their age for the Social Security and other federal entities. The section allowing this is buried in HB 1432 having to do with county government. It amends the state statutes pertaining to destruction of county records by inserting the following paragraph:
Section 2. Amendatory 19 O. S. 2001, Section 155.2. A. 6. County school records as transferred from the county superintendent’s office may be destroyed in accordance with the State Department of Education Standards.
The destruction of these records will be allowed if HB 1432 is allowed to stand as currently written. The importance of these records to the history of our state requires that they be preserved. An amendment requiring the county clerks to transfer possession of these valuable records to either the Oklahoma Historical Society Archives or to the State Archives at the Oklahoma Department of Libraries is very important. It would be a travesty in this year of celebrating our heritage to allow the very destruction of that heritage. Please call, email or visit your state senator and representative immediately to educate them to the importance of preserving these historical documents. Find your Representative and Senator at the Oklahoma State Legislature Home Page. Thank you, Billie Fogarty, President Oklahoma Genealogical Society
=================== Follow-Up ====== 27 March 2007 ==================== You all are fantastic! Thanks for the help with HB 1432. I just spoke with Guy Robison, Senator Laughlin's Executive Assistant. As the Senate author of the bill, he has agreed to remove that provision from the bill so the records will not be destroyed. Next year we will work with him to try to get those records transferred to the Oklahoma Historical Society for safeguarding. Now one more favor. Please send Senator Laughlin and any others you contacted an email thanking them for responding so favorably to our concerns. Again, thank you to everyone who contacted someone about this issue.
